LNG in 60 seconds

  1. Step 1

    NATURAL GAS

    Methane delivered in gaseous form.

  2. Step 2

    COOLED TO APPROXIMATELY -260°F

    Cryogenic liquefaction.

  3. Step 3

    BECOMES LIQUID

The gas changes phase to a liquid.

  4. Step 4

    VOLUME REDUCED APPROXIMATELY 600X

Far denser energy per unit of volume.

  5. Step 5

    TRANSPORTABLE ENERGY

Moved by truck, rail, barge or vessel.

Natural gas normally moves through pipelines. Liquefaction cools it until it becomes a liquid, which shrinks its volume dramatically. That density is what makes it practical to load energy onto a truck, rail car, barge or vessel and deliver it to a customer.

The result: natural gas can reach locations where traditional pipeline infrastructure may not be practical — remote industrial sites, distributed generation, and facilities whose power needs outpace local grid capacity. At the destination, regasification converts the liquid back to gas so it can be burned to generate electricity.
